How to import camcorder video to ipad to edit in reeldirector?

Q. I have reeldirector app for my ipad and my camcorder records AVCHD on SD card, i have ipad camera connection kit (SD slot & USB) and when on holiday i would like to edit or store footage on ipad, if not possible what do i need to convert AVCHD footage to the format for reeldirector on ipad if using my iMac (preferably free)
