I want a tablet with a Digitizer pen and keyboard. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Q. When I was in college the IT Center allowed the students to borrow a tablet PC and I fell in love with it. It had a keyboard and Digitizer pen. I have been going crazy searching for something similar with no luck. Someone recommended the HP TouchSmart tm2-2150us Notebook PC. I want a tablet with a Digitizer pen and keyboard. Does anyone have any further recommendation?

A. I have had mine for a week. Typing on it now. After removing a lot of the hp junk put on the computer, and getting the running processes down to about 60 from over 100 it is a pretty fast machine. Figure you will need a few days to get the settings to your liking and optimize windows 7. . If you are not tech savvy it would help to have someone who is help you to set it up to run well for your needs. Before fixing it up it was slower than my older laptop. I used the hp installed software and did a reinstall of the operating system using the choice for installing windows 7 and minimal hp software, then removed some more and stopped useless background processes. Other people feel reinstalling wndows is better.

As a student or teacher you should join hpa (hp academy) You can get it for 750 plus tax delivered, or a bit less if you put it in your cart to hold, then wait a few days till they send you some discount coupons Otherwise think it runs about 50 more. Do not think there is anything comparable in the price range. You get a full pc for a little more than the cost of a good tablet.
good sound quality, not bad speakers for a laptop, for some reason better when in tablet mode.

The digitizer pen works very well to navigate, draw or write.

The touchscreen works, but does not seem to be nearly as accurate as an ipad or high quality android device.Definitely usable with calibration and some practice.

Keyboard rocks, screen is nice but very glossy.

Seems to be very well built for a hp laptop.

easy to manipulate,

I find it light and easy to carry but I am a 6 foot guy. Is a bit thick.

Good battery life, seems to be 5 or more hours with average use.

are a few odd things that do not work perfectly, software conflicts with some drawing apps like sketchbook, turning screen and other things. They all have easy work arounds.

HP support has only been good for their standard protocols, other than that they are nice, but do not seem to really get it.

Original Question

What material can I use to make an iPhone/iPad stylus?
Q. You know how on laptop mouses, it's only really responsive to your skin? It's the same way with iPhones and iPad screens. I'm trying to make a stylus for my iPad by wrapping material around a pencil. Does anyone know of any material that iPad/iPhone/iTouch screens are responsive to?

Oranges work, but it's sort of hard to wrap orange skin around a pencil.

A. Well, before you make a stylus, you have to understand more about how the touch screen works. The touch screens on the iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and iPod nano work by collecting a small electric change on your skin which is then picked up by the digitizer on the screen. So what you need to do is find out what electric the touch screen collects, and then find out what products have that. PS. if you did make a stylus, i am pretty sure that it would only be temporary because the electric change would eventually run out. Hope this helps

Original Question

What is the best brand of tablet with the most features and biggest screen size?
Q. I am not a fan of the ipad but am interested to see what people think is the best tablet on the market NOT including the ipad (which i think is priced too high and popular due to consumer hype.) I am in the market for one but got overwhelmed when I went to the store. What tablet has the best features, memory, screen size etc. At the store I played with the samsung tablet and blackberry but I don't know much about either. thanks

A. Apple achieves high levels of fit and finish on their products, but, yes, they're relatively expensive. It sounds like you'd prefer the more open approach of Android tablets, which also happen to have much better cameras than the iPad. That's certainly fine. Here are some other considerations...

If cellular service is important, you may want to consider which tablet your favorite carrier supports:

Verizon:Galaxy Tab 10.1, iPad 2, Xoom, and Galaxy Tab

T-Mobile:G-Slate, Streak 7, and Galaxy Tab

Sprint:PlayBook and Galaxy Tab

AT&T:iPad 2 and Galaxy Tab

None:Eee Slate, Slate 500, TouchPad, Thrive, Eee Pad TF101, Iconia Tab A500, Archos 101, Archos 70, and NOOK Color

For overall value, the ASUS Eee Transformer (TF101) has surprisingly good specs for under $400: Android 3.1, 10.1 inch 1280x800 IPS (like iPad, but bigger and higher resolution) display, up to 9 hours of battery life (16 hours if optional dock added), optional ability to dock with keyboard, 1 GHz Tegra 250 ARM CPU with 1 GB RAM, good array of ports (mini HDMI, SD, micro SD), preloaded Polaris Office 3.0 for editing documents (.doc), spreadsheets (.xls) and presentation (.ppt) files. Note, though, no 3G (however people report success in tethering it to smart phones).

If Windows OS compatibility or a digitizer pen is important to you, go for the ASUS Eee Slate or HP Slate 500. The biggest differences between those are that the ASUS has a better display (12.1 inch AFFS 1280x800) than the HP (8.9 inch TFT 1024x600) but is larger, heavier and more expensive.

The Galaxy Tab 10.1 is the thinnest (0.336 inches) and lightest (1.25 lbs) the big-screen (greater than 9 inch) tablets.

If high-end video recording is important to you, consider the LG G-Slate or BlackBerry PlayBook, both of which can record at 1080p. The still cameras on those devices are pretty good too: G-Slate has Dual 5 MP rear cameras and a 2MP front camera; PlayBook has 5MP front and 3MP rear cameras.

Motorola Xoom: Heavier and thicker than both the iPad or Galaxy Tab, the Xoom's advantage is that it has HDMI out and micro USB ports. It also has a 5MP rear camera compared to Tab's 3MP and iPad's lousy 0.7MP.
