A. Hello Justin!
Unfortunately, you cannot update Facebook (Fb) via Hotmail, Yahoo, or any other e-mail account. You can only receive FB update NOTIFICATIONS on any given e-mail account--depending on what you've allowed in your Account Settings--but it is mandatory that you logon to FB itself to do any updates (like your status or to reply to messages--sent within the FB messaging system).
Depending on what kind of smart phone you have--i.e. an Apple iPhone or a Samsung Galaxy S, just to name two--you can download the FB application for either phone and do your updates that way.
That's just the way FB is....
