A. iPhone: No type of home screen custimization. You have all your apps on one screen. It's like a computer desktop. You have all your programs on the homescreen and you can only have one background picture. (Don't get technical and start referencing Win. 7) The iPhone is only on AT&T. The iPhone has a front facing camera. The only apps you can get for a iPhone are the ones in the Apple Market. The only way to get user created apps is to Jailbreak your iPhone.
Captivate: Almost unlimited types of options to changing the home screen. You can have all the apps on one screen. Your backgrounds can be still pictures, moving pictures, or interactive where you can touch them or change depending on time, battery status, position of phone. Way better camera since Samsung makes cameras so you'd get a boost from that. You can easily download an app from the internet and put it on your phone (but that makes you more prone to phone viruses but just download --Lookout Mobile Security-- it's free) If you don't like AT&T you can get the Captivates other Galaxy S cousins, Vibrant (Tmo), Epic 4G -Qwerty (Sprint) and Fascinate (Verizon). Has widgets, similar to like having an IM on your computer always open on your desktop. The IM is just there and you don't have to click on the icon to open it up. That's a widget. Facebook widget shows most current status based on last sync on the widget, and also gives an option to view the next status or even update your status without ever having to open the app itself.
All in all, if you want to do whatever you want with your phone without any hassles, want cool homescreen designs, basically if you care about what your phones looks like when you're changing homescreens, then get the Captivate
If all you want to do with your phone is call, internet, facebook, samething as other phones, but you just want to go in and out, you really don't care about custimization features, then the iPhone is for you. You probably would think the Captivate had a lot of unecessary features if you didn't care about them.
P.S. Both phones allow you to change your ringtones and other tone related notifications. I can't believe somebody actually believed that the iPhone didn't allow you to do this. Even my mom's 1990 phone had the option to change ringtones. LoL!!

A. HTC Desire I have it and it rocks awesome internet and battery life!
