Original Question

What is the best ebook to buy?
Q. I am an aspiring author, constantly writing stories.. I would like to buy an ebook so that I can keep all my stories in one place, without my bag being full of papers. It needs to be really portable, a reasonable price, but I want to read stories from it too. Can you write stories on the Amazon Kindle? Thanks for your help:)

A. I love my kindle, but I don't think it would be right for you since as mentioned you can't really write or edit any documents. With the kindle you can just add notes next to text - but not change the core document, so it would not be suitable for an author.
Honestly I think you should consider going old school and getting something like the monochrome visor neo pda, with one of the attachable keyboards:
http://www.syncpedia.com/goto/visor_neo_pda

Like the kindle it has a screen that doesn't use a backlit by default, so it doesn't cause eyestrain and is more like real paper. You can load documents to go (a palm application) onto the visor, and then it lets you create and edit word documents right on the device - either with the palm stylus, or using one of the attachable keyboards.
The screen is smaller then the kindle, but I had a visor previously and it was very comfortable with me (and I have sensative eyes). Lastly you can get a memplug memory model on ebay etc that will let you expand the memory if you ever need more to store documents etc.

You could consider any other model palm pdas for the same purpose (including color models, but keep in mind they are backlit and might cause eyestrain):

The only problem with my idea is that the palm desktop software works flawlessly with windows xp or under, and works mostly ok with windows 7, but might require a little more technical work to get it working. For example sometimes usb cables do not work with certain models on windows 7, but you can get a windows 7 compatible usb to serial adapter, and use a palm serial cradle (or a handspring visor serial cradle) - and the serial connection will work fine - if that makes sense.
So if your planning to use a visor with windows 7, you should be prepared for some extra work to get it working.
Feel free to email me for advice on that.

Original Question

is the kindle fire good for drawing?
Q. I'm looking to buy my girlfriend (a very talented artist) a pad so she can draw and I came accross these ad's on craigslist about kindle fire but my only concern is that they don't provide enough functions for her drawing and painting needs. Can anyone tell me how good the drawing apps are? price for the apps are not a problem either I just want to find her a really good one.

A. Kindle Fire,
http://www.amazon.com/Kindle-Fire-Amazon-tablet/dp/B0083Q04IQ

these devices are originally for reading as a Reader device, not drawing or doodling,

you may move up to iPad or Android savvy devices, with some better support for image edit Apps,
even then , limitation requiring added stylus, and compatible tools, and possibly web service, to use online Apps,

from there, you're looking at actual portable laptop with Painter or Photoshop type programs,
__________

if not digital devices, and significant other is into arts, figure out which medium, and buy actual paints or paper and or clay, and tools for real artwork,
..
