Q. So I decided to buy e books from now on to save the clutter...but it seems they are of lower standards than printed book...Whereas printed books have uniform format and designed dust jackets that feature reviews, e books (especially the epub format) feels like a note pad text version of the text without graphics and...
Why don't they release books in PDF and always release books in epub?
Will e books take over in the long run over printed books?
A. Ebooks are often written by new, aspiring or up and coming authors. They will submit their books to ebook publishers because there is little to no actual costs involved and the publishers take a huge chunk of the profits. Or a writer can self publish an ebook with little to no overhead and sell on sites like Amazon, Barnes & Nobel or other book sites. This format is very cheap and easy to produce.
Since many of these writers are just starting or think they are good writers, they put up whatever they can manage to complete and price it low enough that someone will buy it.
It takes a lot of money, time and resources to actually print a paper book, so book printers and publishers will only take risks when they think they can make a profit off selling the books. There are some small publisher/printers that are willing to print smaller editions if you are willing to pay the printing costs.
I had a friend that did this once - both paper and electronic. He sent in manuscripts, they edited them and produced paper and electronic versions. The writings were pretty good and interesting, but really weren't best seller material.
Epub seems to be the most common format, as all ereaders use this format except for the Kindle. But you can usually find Kindle compatible versions of most titles on Amazon. Otherwise, rtf and txt files usually work, but can't be annotated the way an epub or mobi (Kindle) file can.
Ebooks are very popular and are getting more so, but I think it will take a long time for paper books to actually disappear. There will be a market for paper books for quite a while, especially in schools and libraries. I think that personal reading will migrate over to electronic readers in the next 25-50 years as ereaders become more inexpensive, common and popular. Already most phones and tablets have the ability to display an ebook.
