A. You can buy any Data phone from a service provider and not have a data plan, but that would require you to turn off all "DATA" services on the phone in its settings. I haven't heard of any SP telling its customers that they absolutely need a Data Plan in order to buy the phone.
In this case, I'd be careful, Cause with a Data Plan and the wrong settings may run you into bad dollar signs.
I have a plan with my Samsung Galaxy S Fascinate, the Data Plan is called "My Fab 10", I have 1GB of Free Data, any Gig after is 20 dollars each. I can call up to 10 people nationwide, and recieve calls from them for free. and Unlimited texting, for just 60 dollars a month. Not bad!

A. Try your specific model name or number, for example i9000, or Samsung Captivate, or Samsung Fascinate, or Samsung Vibrant, or Samsung Epic 4G. You can find your model number under the battery of the phone.

A. message > settings > notification settings > vibrate
oh and just for an fyi, galaxy s phones dont light up when you receive a text, so you can use the app NoLed. That way your phone will vibrate AND light up in case you have the phone silenced
