Q. I'm writing a story, and this is what I have so far. I'd like to know if anybody would read it. Sorry if there are errors, but my iPad and computer aren't cooperating very well together.
I pushed my hair behind my ear, once again revealing the greatest mystery to my younger sister Caroline and I; a black, thumbnail sized tattoo of a five-sided star inside of a circle just below my right ear, identical to Carly's. The only problem was, neither of us knew how they got there.
I examined the tattoo for a minute, noticing the obvious; each line was perfect, the star seeming to be made from only one line. But then I noticed the things that weren't so obvious, like the foriegn language on the circle.
Once again, I came up with nothing that could have possibly created these tattoos and pulled my long, wavy, light brown hair over my shoulder, making sure the tattoo was covered by my hair, then looked at myself in the mirror again to make sure that I was ready to become one of the angels who lived here, one of the Ravenna.
The light blue dress I was supposed to wear reached to the ground, dragging behind me, the top a v-neck and folded, the right half twisting left and slightly covering the left half, both halves stopping at the thin band of pearl flowers just above my waist, almost like a belt.
I had on the silver necklace my brother gave me, the only thing I had left of my brother, and briefly admired the three petaled flower symbol, called the triquetra. The entire thing was imbedded with white diamonds, but in the opening in the middle was a small, clear, smooth stone, white lines streaking across in random directions, the stone looking slightly purple in the right lighting.
Nobody knew what had happened to my brother, Damien, or where he was. The rest of the angels said it was too dangerous to go look for him at this time, especially since nobody had any idea of his whereabouts, or if he was even still alive or not.
I sighed and turned around, my hand pressing the necklace as tightly to my chest as possible, as I slipped my feet into the dress shoes that matched the color of my dress. I looked up as my sister knocked on the door, asking if I was ready yet.
"Yeah. I'll be down in just a second." I answered.
I took one last look at myself in the mirror, seeing the light blue eyeshadow I had put on, and the mascara, then turned and walked out the door, finding my sister standing there next to the door, leaning against the wall, her arms folded across her chest. I looked at her for a moment, and she looked at me.
She was wearing the same dress as me, and she had on the same necklace our brother gave her, only hers was gold and slightly hidden behind her chestnut brown hair, which she had straightened and put in a ponytail. She had on mascera and the same light blue eyeshadow, brightening her light blue eyes.
I smiled at her and put my arm in hers, then we went down the stairs and out the front door, turned right, and started towards Merrilea lake, where the rest of the Ravenna were crowded, waiting for my sister and I to appear and start the ceremony.
Every time we walked out into that field, we always saw the beautiful waterfall in the background, called Silvermist falls, then we saw Merrilea lake and the vast field surrounding it, and that was where we always felt at peace for the past month, even when nothing seemed to be going right.
I stepped out from behind the last house, my sister next to me, and felt all eyes on us. I heard quiet whispers as we walked by, some were about what people had heard about my sister and I, some were about how beautiful we looked, but all were centered around my sister and I.
We stopped just out of reach of the tiny waves lapping at our feet, standing in front of the new leader of the Ravenna, Stacy. She had long blonde hair and chocolate brown eyes, her golden heart necklace laying gently against her chest, the small March aquamarine birthstone set in the bottom corner of the heart. I stood there next to my sister, facing Stacy, waiting patiently for the ceremony to begin.
"Today, we welcome Clarissa and Caroline to our family." Stacy said.
She smiled at me and gently and flipped my right hand over so my wrist was facing up, then pulled out a thin paintbrush dipped in black paint and drew the triquetra inside of a circle on my wrist.
A. pretty good so far, just fixed some spelling. Really interesting story.I liked it... :) :)
Did the Industrial Revolution destroy our society?
Q. I am watching "The Men Who Built America" and IMO I think it ruined our society. The working conditions were absolutely terrible and workers barely got paid anything. They could barely feed their kids. You have these evil men who built these companies and they lived in a lap of luxury while their employees inhaled massive amounts of smog from steal mills. It did in fact "revolutionize" our society into the way it is today but in a bad way. All these big shots today only care about profits, consumerism, and mass production. They care less about their slaving employees. Yes we have Unions now but they aren't very relavent considering how many laws are in place now. I appreciate them for fighting for workers back then (and helped put those laws in place) but there is not much they can do now. We now live in a world where you stand in a factory for 12 hours doing back breaking labor and for what? To watch your family's structure go down the toilet? Before the Industrial revolution life was simple. Yeah you still worked long hours but it was on a farm. You were your own boss and you got to feed yourself and sell your produce to others for money. Family structure was stong because a father and son got to bond while doing their work. It was the pinnacle of masculinity. Now the fathers have to be gone all day and not able mentor their kids. That is why there is so many miguided boys today who basically get left to the media to tell them how to be a man.... which usually turns out to be either a steryle "nice" boy, or grow up to be abusive. Man we live in a messed up world now.
A. I absolutely agree with you. Human beings were not meant to stand on their feet all day, doing monotonous and highly dangerous work on auto assembly lines or in other factories. People still get seriously injured and killed in those jobs but we never hear about them. And how sad is it that we even need labor unions to protect us from unscrupulous, evil, greedy, miserable, rotten, overpaid CEOs in the first place!
Office work is the same bullshit, but the stress is on your soul and your humanity. Who cares if this report isn't typed properly or you forgot to fill out this page, or you didn't make your sales quota? You're right, in the days of family farms none of that existed and we did just fine. Technology has done great things for us, including making us healthier, improved sanitation, standardized manufacturing processes so the products we buy are safe and effective. But, It also turned us into over-scheduled, over-bureaucratized, subservient little boys and girls who are afraid of being downsized or just plain fired for no good reason.
I wish we could go back to a simpler time when family was all you needed and you respected and depended upon each other. We don't need iPhones, iPads, tech support, none of that crap.
