Q. The usb port is still barely functional. Hopefully there is a way to just take the battery out, plug it up to something, put it vacillate in the kindle, and have the battery Icon be full for once.....hopefully
A. No, and it's very dangerous to do such thing. There're news from time to time, that the battery explode on the mobile devices...
Instead, since it's an old devices, chances are the battery monitor firmware has gone out of sync with actual battery charge. The tablet will appear to be unable to charge, turn on, having frozen screen, etc. There's a good discussion here on how to fix such kind of problem:

If problem persists, contact Amazon support to see if they can do anything for you.
My Kindle is frozen, and the power slider isn't working. What do I do?
Q. I was reading the Return of the King when my Kindle suddenly froze on the page I was on. I'm sure that it wasn't the power: it was fully charged, and no "Your Kindle battery is low" came up. The sliding power switch won't work, and the light doesn't turn on. I tried the 30 second hard reset, charging it in a wall charger, charging it in my computer, and absolutely nothing works! I need help, and fast! Thanks!
A. Call amazon and they can walk you through it or replace for free.
That or you can just wait for the New Amazon TABLET to be released in one month. It looks AMAZING!

do you have to replace the kindle battery after a month?
Q. on amazon.com it say the battery last ten days to a month depending if you use it wireless or not.Does this mean you have to buy a new battery?
A. Hi.As someone else said, once the battery runs out you just recharge it.You are given an adapter for the device to charge it with. It's just like if you charge a cell phone or ipod.
