Q. I know you need to take off your shoes, and put the quart size plastic bag from your carry on and your cell phone in there, but what other things should you put in that bin when you go through security at an airport? Should any item with metal on it go in there? How does it work? I know that like, for example, the clasp on my wallet has some metal on it. What about things like cell phone chargers?
A. Depends on what country you are departing from.
In the US, http://www.tsa.gov is the website for the transportation security administration.
If you are flying from another country go on the appropriate website for that country.
But generally, laptop in addition to the other items you mentioned.
If you have keys or coins in your pocket, remove those.
Your cell phone can go through packed in your carry on; you only need to remove it if you are carrying it on your person.
Ipad can go through in your bag.
If you are wearing a hat or sweatshirt, bulky sweater, coat or jacket, that needs to come off.
What are your thoughts on the ipad as a gift?
Q. Im starting early on Christmas gifts, and my boyfriend could really use a new laptop. I have heard that the ipad can do the same things as a laptop, only it is more fun to use. He would mainly use it for fantasy sports, checking email, and surfing the web. What are your thoughts?
Also - if it is ant consolation, I bought him an ipod touch last year for Christmas. Is the ipad basically the same thing, only bigger?
A. Well if you are expecting them to be as useful and handy as a laptop, they're not.
I've read several technical reports on them and here are a few of the areas that they lack in:
1. They're kind of slippery with all their smooth surfaces and not easily carried unless you use a pouch/bag.
2. They tend not to be flat. So when you put it on a flat surface they tend to spin some.
3. Typing is done on the touchscreen so it's not close to the normal typing experience with a keyboard.
4. They're hard to see/read in bright light.
5. They don't have the overall computing power that a decent laptop will provide.
6. You can't customize the hardware/software to suit your true needs.
7. Becareful of the pricing. Look at what you'll need for accessories and the pricing of them before you get hung up on the "low" price of the Ipad itself. Initially they were offering it for around $450 and I've read reports that essentially said: "once I got all I needed I spent nearly $800." So make sure you know what you need long before you purchase or order one.
Once you have a complete picture of the Ipad, what you'll need to go with it, and a bottom line total price, compare that with how much laptop you can buy with the same money.
I'm not a big Ipad fan to begin with but I have a feeling that if you shop around you can find a pretty good tablet pc or laptop that will offer him a lot more capability for the $$$$.
Good luck and I hope this helps some.
