Q. I dont see how it could possibly have gps without 3g. Am I wrong? Does it work well?
A. The iPad wifi can find your location without you entering info but it's kind of silly. When do you need GPS? When you are going somewhere new correct? So if you only have the wifi version how will your iPad know where you are? You still need a constant connection. But yes you don't need 3g. Just connection from your phone or however you get it.
iPad 2 Wi-Fi ONLY HAS GPS?
Q. ***BEFORE YOU SAY THE IPAD 2 HAS NO GPS, PLEASE READ WHAT I HAVE TO SAY BELOW BEFORE ANSWERING THE QUESTION!***
So today at school I opened up my Maps app on my iPad 2 Wi-Fi only, it was not connected to any Wi-Fi hotspots but it pinpointed my school exactly, showing where I was. The maps did not load so it looked like it just pinpointed me on a yellow canvas, but I also dropped a pin there and when I went home and connected it to the Internet the dropped pin was exactly on my school. If people say the Wi-Fi only iPad doesn't have a GPS receiver, how did it know where I was exactly? Did it look up the mac addresses of surrounding Wi-Fi hotspots to get my location as I've noticed when I have Wi-Fi turned on that's the only time it can determine where I am, even though I'm not connected to any hotspots. Also, I'm not totally sure but I think where I was standing with the iPad there were no nearby Wi-Fi connections. Also I didn't look though so it could've picked one up from somewhere. Please tell me how the iPad knew where I (or "it") was. Thanks!
A. No, iPad 2 Wifi doesn't have GPS, but its LBS (Location Based Service) does offer some sort of wifi pinpointing based on your current presence. I have tried that too, just for fun, try to turn off the wifi and you would see that it won't work.
Here's something even more annoying, try use iPad 3G (it does have GPS) with SatNav software like Sygic (it has map locally installed so no need to access internet for map) but when you turn off its wifi & mobile service it won't work. So GPS services kind of attached to 3G mobile service or wifi
PS: I did try to make my iPod touch as SatNav when I found it can't work without wifi to pinpoint location, I guess Apple just doesn't want it to have GPS
Does the new Ipad have or get GPS on it.?
Q.
A. Really, the Ipad is basically a prototype model for future tablet technology. Though it is one the first of its kind, it has a variety of abilities due to the "apps" created. Since the Ipad has Wifi connection everywhere if you purchase it, it can, indeed, act as a GPS system.
However, they will only be sufficient to the bare minimum. It's probably better to actually buy a real GPS system if you plan to use it in the car. For example on http://www.bestgpssystemforcarsinfo.com/, the GPS systems listed have many features that dip into traffic detection and what are the most effective routes. Probably way better than an app on an ipad imo.
