Which Cell phone is the best choice with Verizon?

Q. I want to upgrade my old cell phone to a new one. My old one is over 4 years old. I'd like to upgrade to a smart phone, which I've never had. I have looked at the Samsung Galaxy 3 and the Droid Razor. I hate asking at the Verizon store and they usually steer you to the newest models. This is such a confusing decision with so many choices out there. And, its something I have to live with for at least 2 years, so any advice would be greatly appreciated since I am totally stuck. I just can't decide what to pick. I've read reviews. The Samsung Galaxy seems awfully large so not sure how I would like its size, and I've heard the Droid Razor freezes. I'd like to hear whatever people who have used them have to say. Thanks.

A. Well, I definitely recommend you get a phone that has the best specs available because that's gonna let your phone stay more relevant as the time passes by.

So I would recommend the Galaxy S III. Trust me, I have the S III and it doesn't feel big at all. It can look overwhelming at the beginning, but you'll get used to really quickly. As for the Droid Razr (I'm assuming you're asking about the OG Razr), I wouldn't recommend it because it's already a year old. As for the Droid Razr HD (in case that's what you're also curious about), it also has good specs, but it's not the same version as the S III. The only reason I would recommend a Motorola phone in general is because the radios are so good compared to the S III. But that's the only plus over the S III. Hope this helped.

Original Question

Should i get a case for my phone ?
Q. I just ordered the Samsung galaxy s III and it should be here in a few days. I'm trying to decide if I should order a case or not. Does it really help to protect the phone or is it mostly for looks?

A. Only if you have a history of dropping your phone, because although the phone has gorilla glass an wont really get scratched up, it isn't impervious to being dropped.

Here's a drop test video:

So if your looking for the best protection from drops, an otterbox is the way to go:

If you want style, light protection, and a kickstand boxwave is the way to go:

Original Question

What patents is Apple accusing Samsung of infringing with the Galaxy S III?
Q. I've read the exact apparent patents, but I'm kind of confused on what exactly they mean. Can someone put it in simpler terms for me? I understand a decent deal of computers and other tech, perhaps even a rookie tech savant, but still, confused. And what's the chances of this petition actually taking effect? I've been waiting for the GSIII for a while and I'm due for an upgrade.

They're patent #'s 8,086,604 and 5,946,647

A. The '604 patent relates to searching: specifically, the ability to use a single search interface to enter a search phrase, and then have the computer or device retrieve matches from multiple types of sources (applications, file names, file contents, the Internet, etc.) and present the best matches to the user based on an intelligent algorithm or processing on a back-end server. In the current case, this most directly applies to the algorithm that Siri uses to figure out what you're asking for, when you give it a question in a natural language. It is probably also related to the technology behind Spotlight, the global search mechanism in Mac OS X.

The '647 patent is the "data detectors" patent, filed by Apple quite a long time ago. Basically, when the software detects that something is a phone number, an email address, a web URL, etc. it will figure that out and present to you a variety of options specific to that type of data. So if the device sees the string "313-555-1212" in an email, it would highlight that number and present options like "call", "add to contacts", etc. It seems pretty obvious now, but it was actually a fairly novel idea back in 1996.
