My tablet doesnt charge while its on?

Q. my samsung galaxy tablet 10.1 for some reason only charges while it's turned off. When plugged in while on, it just has a red X over the battery icon. Ive had this tablet for about a year or two and ive never had trouble with it, well not like this.
