Is honeycomb an update from gingerbread?
Q. Is it like a download that you download for free? Or is it something that comes with a device when you buy it? Or do you have to pay to down load it?
Please explain I am considering buying a HTC flyer for a Christmas gift but I don't know if I should wait for Honeycomb or what not.
A. In the context of the Flyer, it definitely is an update. Gingerbread was developed specifically for mobile phones, whereas Honeycomb was for tablets. Android development on mobile phones preceded the same on tablets, hence Gingerbread is the older with a "2" version numbers vs Honeycomb with a "3" version number. The Flyer being a tablet, it would be obviously better suited to Honeycomb.
Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) is the newest Android variant, and carries the "4" version number. It is intended to merge Gingerbread & Honeycomb into a single unified operating system that would optimally compile for whatever device it is installed, be it phone or tablet. Google are doing the development on a Samsung platform called the Nexus.
I have a HTC Flyer, and although very useful, it feels like a gigantic mobile phone that cannot make a phone call! It would have been great to use a Bluetooth mouse with it, but Gingerbread is not designed for that! Do not believe HTC regarding the Honeycomb upgrade promised soon after the Flyers release, as this tablet has been on the market for over seven months without any hint of upgrade (unless you want to void your warranty).
My advice is to at least wait for Honeycomb to roll out on the Flyer, if ever. If it's for this Christmas though, look for a device that already supports it. Betting on HTC won't be a good call. The latest Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 sports Honeycomb, and has a far superior 1280x800 AMOLED display!
