Q. I was thinking of getting an ipad instead of a laptop for college this fall. I thought that an ipad would be better because I would be able to reduce the cost of books by getting e-versions. Is it possible use a cordless keyboard with an ipad? Do ipads have USB drives?

A. Well, you would need a keyboard for it, as typing on the screen is absolutely horrible. You can buy a keyboard accessory for upwards of $60. The apple brand wireless keyboard is only $70 though. The iPad does not have a USB port. You can buy a USB adapter that allows a digital camera to be connected. However, apple does not support USB drives at this time.

Q. The USB allows you to connect extrernal hard disk drives, ext monitors, and all kinds of other devices (like spectrometers) knwon by people who work in that fields.
A. Use Bluetooth for keyboard connections, or the keyboard dock for long typing.
iDisplay can make your iPad an external monitor.
Another device I can't recall at the moment lets your iPhone work with it to act as a giant camera screen.
iPhone OS apps add functionality to the devices. You just need to know what you're looking for. I gathered file sharing and printing options with other apps I've found recently. Just know where to look in the app store.
