Q. I see and hear pilots talking about or using kneeboards but what do they do with them? Also i hear that some use Ipad's but what apps would you use for a kneeboard?
A. A kneeboard is something you tie to your thigh and use to hold various things you need. What I put on mine:
- Checklist.
- Basic rules (e.g. lightgun signals).
- Timer.
- Taxi diagram.
- Pen (preferably two).
- Post-it notes for clearance, ATIS etc.
- Sectional or IFR chart.
can i use a kindle fire in the cockpit like an ipad for a kneeboard?
Q. i have a kindle fire and i want to know if i can use it like an ipad in the cockpit?
i dont want to spend money on an ipad if i dont have to. i know i dont need one to fly, its one of those nice to have things. however, i'd like to have one, but if i can use my kindle fire instead then i wont buy one
A. Would the answer "sort of" suit you? There are some apps for android that will run on the Fire just fine. There s a big HOWEVER with that. The Fire does not have GPS or Bluetooth so there is no way to get moving maps to work, that is a big drawback. At present the maps are OK but not great on the android. The screen on the Fire is not the best in full daylight. The size of the screen is OK but not the best with maps. Other than that, you can get some usable info but not near as much as with an iPad or full Android tablet.
I've tried both and currently still use a Fujitsu Tablet with Windows OS and a full daylight screen. There are tons more useable applications! The screen is much better. Fujitsu has been in the tablet business longer than anyone! Over 10 years before Apple.
