Q. I am taking a math class online for college and my parents are generously considering buying me a laptop. I was looking at the MacBook Air and it seems like a great laptop for carrying around campus and for taking online classes. However, the price is a little steep. Would a iPad be just as useful and convenient? The price is a little better but my concern is not being able to type as easily. What is your suggestion? Is there another kind of laptop I should be considering?
A. The iPad is not a laptop replacement. It may work for some note taking, but it's not a computer and you'll need a laptop anyway. Congratulations on your choice of a Mac, but consider a 13" Macbook Pro rather than a Macbook Air. The Air lacks an optical drive and has a small solid state drive (SSD). The Macbook Pro at the same price point has a hard disk drive (HDD) that is twice the size of the same priced Air with SSD. The 13" Macbook Pro is $100 less than the 13" Macbook Air and weighs just a pound and a half more. The HDD is twice the size of the Air's SSD, and the Pro's Core2 Duo processor is twice the clock speed of the Air's Core2 Duo. The Pro also has twice the RAM of the Air.
The Air is a great second laptop for a business traveller. It isn't a computer for a student. The extra pound and a half you won't notice. The missing speed and storage you will. The iPad is for content consumption, like movies, magazines and books--not for a student unless it's in addition to a laptop. As a laptop replacement it's not a contender.
BTW, my 13" Macbook Pro fits easily into the same kind of envelope that the old Macbook Air commercials showed the Air being pulled from! It's barely bigger.
Help with Mail on iPad mini?
Q. I just got a new iPad mini and synced it with my other apple device. I'm trying to go into Mail and when i click into iCloud and put in my email it just comes up, "-my email- is already added"!! Any help? A.S.A.P!!
A. Not sure what you mean by 'click into iCloud', but if it tells you it was already added, look for an app that looks like an envelope. That is the Apple email app. Your email acct should be there.
If that does not show your email acct then go to the Settings app, then "Mail, Calendars, Contacts", and click on "Add account". Answer the questions and at the end it will test connect to your email, showing that you did it properly.
Does My Gold Envelope pay well for cellphones and small amounts of jewelry?
Q. I have some extra phones, and a few rings, and I'd like some extra cash for an iPad and/or the Palm Pre Plus, so I was just curious to if they actually pay well. Thanks! =)
A. I donât know what cash4gold will pay. I do know from my past experience, that I sent them a scrap jewelry ring and they paid me $50.26. I rejected the offer and they returned my ring promptly. I then found another company, http://www.captaincashforgold.com/ that paid me $193 for the same ring!! and they enclosed a track able Fedex pack along with $500 insurance as opposed to some crappy envelope from cash4gold that you cant even track. I really got burned a couple of times using a couple of different cash for gold companies but with http://www.captaincashforgold.com/ I feel I finally found one that I could really trust with my valuables.
