- Built-in light

While on Basic Kindle you are basically getting an entry into eBook readers with the cheapest price you can pay for.

Can kindle paperwhite read college textbooks online?
Q. Hi I don't know much about kindles but I am a college student and I have several science courses. I was wondering if the kindle can open and read etexts from the pearson websites? currently I go on their website and log in then go into their etext version of the textbook to read. Would the paperwhite be able to do this? if so what about purchasing full etextbooks, do they offer that as well?

A. The Kindle Paperwhite does not have the best browser for doing what you want to do. It is best for simply reading e-books that you purchase from Amazon. Amazon does offer some e-textbooks, but you would have to check with them to see if they offer the titles that you are looking for. The Kindle Paperwhite is $119 from Amazon.
What would do what you want it to do would be the Kindle Fire or Kindle Fire HD. These are tablet e-readers and use a modified Android operating system. These can also read e-books and e-textbooks from Amazon as well as PDF files. The Fire sells for $159 from Amazon and the Fire HD sells for $199 and up from Amazon.
Contact your college bookstore to see if the full e-textbooks they use are compatible with Kindles. However, Kindle is one of the most widely used and well known e-readers so there is a good chance that they are. Also check with Amazon to see if they offer the e-textbooks that you are interested in purchasing.

Q. Okay, I have been trying to decide on whether to buy a Kindle Paperwhite or a Kindle Fire. I have been wanting a tablet for quite some time now, but I don't know which one would better suit what I want. I made one of my new year plans to begin reading a lot more again. And so I plan on doing a lot of reading this upcoming year. BUT, I have also been wanting an actual tablet for games and netflix and such. I understand that the Kindle Fire has the ability to read AND games/movies/music are also available on it. But, I heard that there is a much better reading experience on the Paperwhite because it actually looks like a book's pages and it doesn't exactly strain your eyes. But anyways, please help me decide and DO NOT BE RUDE! PLEASE! And if you don't mind, please explain why I should buy the Kindle Fire or Kindle Paperwhite. Thanks and Happy New Year :)
A. A Kindle Paperwhite is the superior device for reading. But it's not that superior as compared to a Kindle Fire.
As you wish to do more than just read, I do recommend going for the Kindle Fire, and actually, the Kindle Fire HD has enough added benefits to warrant the extra $40 for it.
