Q. I've had an original Kindle now for two years. I do nothing with it but read. The battery used to, if fully charged, last me about two weeks even if I was using it a lot. Recently though, it has started to last me only a few days. I have recently charged my Kindle from a Laptop running without a battery (i.e. when it is on it is only powered by a a wall plug). But could that have damaged by Kindle battery so drastically?
A. I don't think that would hurt the Kindle unless your laptop has some other problem - if the laptop was working then the USB was working and able to charge the Kindle. I do think you should buy an AC to USB adapter and use that to charge the Kindle - I don't trust laptops to keep the USB powered when unattended and not in use because of all of the layers of power saving in a laptop.

Also - eventually any rechargeable battery will reach a point where it no longer charges well and no longer hold its charge well. So if your Kindle was heavily used with 150+ recharges, the battery could be wearing down.

How many ebooks are on your Kindle? How full is your Kindle's memory?
My Kindle 3 eventually got slow (slow page turns, slow response) and started using the battery up really fast. At the time I had over 2000 ebooks on it (and less might cause this problem if you have a Kindle with less memory - mine has 4gig - or if you have huge ebooks on it like ebooks with lots of images, textbooks, manga etc).
I thought my battery was getting bad so I actually bought a battery replacement kit. When I tried to install the battery I realized how hard it is to get the back cover off - it's not meant for user-service. I realized I would break something if I kept trying to get the back off.
My husband suggested deleting some of the books to see if that was causing the problem. I would be too much of a pain to delete them individually so I de-registered my Kindle. That makes Amazon delete all of the Amazon-purchased ebooks off of it (which was all of my ebooks).
Then I re-registered the Kindle to the same account. After that I went to Manage Your Kindle and sent about 40 ebooks back to it. Next I tried the Kindle by reading a long ebook on it... it was like new - responsive, fast and long battery life.
Question About Kindle 2 Batteries?

A. Hey JustMe: Batteries used to have "memory" and people had to be careful about when to charge their batteries. If they didn't run the battery all the way down before charging, the battery would only charge to that point. Now, batteries don't have "memory" and you may charge them any way you like. Top it up. Run it all the way down. It doesn't matter.
The old theory was, regarding nickel metal (or mercury) hydrate batteries or NMH type batteries. You can, if you like, read about it by searching "battery memory effect." With newer batteries in the past 5 years or so, there is said to be no such effect. Some will still say it's best to fully charge the battery at first and then run it down before you charge it. Can a Kindle 3's battery be overcharged?
Q. I was charging my Kindle 3 for the first time last night at 11pm. I fell asleep and wasn't awake three hours later to check if the light turned green (means fully charged). Woke up at 7am and quickly switched off the charger. Can a Kindle be overcharged and will it have any implications on my new device? I should set the alarm clock next time!
A. Your Kindle has a Lithium ion battery. It won't accept a trickle charge or over charge like a nickel battery. Yank it off the charger as soon as you can after its done. A long over charge time will cause damage to the battery but not the device. Good thing about lithium ion though is that you can throw it on the charger even when it has half of a charge left. Other types of batterys need to be ran dead and only then you can begin charging again.
