Original Question

Is the Apple iPad worth it?
Q. So as of right now I have a Compaq Presario laptop, I loved it for the first few months and then things went downhill. The charger would stop working constantly, the computer overheats everyday so I had to buy a fan for it ($40.00), and altogether the battery life is terrible. And yes everyone will say "oh just buy a new battery" but honestly I regret buying this laptop almost 100% and I don't want to spend another dime on it. So now I am looking into the Apple iPad, it looks like it has everything I need for school. The biggest question I have is if it is worth buying? I would need to use it on a daily basis for schoolwork and other things like facebook. And maybe illaberate on your usage of the iPad to give me an idea of what i might be getting myself into. I was also wondering about the two different keyboards. I know that there is a wireless keyboard and a "dock" keyboard. Does the wireless one come with a dock to stand it up on? And from experience which keyboard would you recommend and why. Any answers would be awesome and I would prefer it if you answered only if you own an iPad so you know from hands on use if this is the right device for my basic needs. Thank you very much. :)
Oh, I am in high school right now so i frequently type essays and yes I do have a desktop in my house.
Thank you all for the wonderful answers and especially the person who wrote me a book off of their iPad. :) So as of right now I am leaning to get it because I do types essays here and there but I don't even do it on my laptop now, I do it on the desktop. The limitation of the iPad for work use doesn't bother me dues to the fact that having my laptop is pointless anyways. The cost is not a problem right now and it is not something I am worried about. I do need something more portable that I can take on the go because I too like to read several books at a time and would love to have something that carries several books at a time, and yes I have looked into the kindle etc. and found it to be a little cheaper than the iPad but the extra features make it sound worth buying. Once again thanks for all of the awesome answers. :) Have a goodnight.

A. Hello I received an iPad as a gift so basically I am an unbiased source. I love this device and everything, but I would not recommend that you buy it if you intend to do a lot of schoolwork. Sure, there are many apps that can let you do a lot of work on it such as writing essays and power points, but working on a PC or a Mac is much faster and more versatile. The iPad is very limited by it's touchscreen when it comes to doing work and it is a hassle trying to convert files sometimes (like when I made a powerpoint in keynote only to find out that it couldn't be converted to a Windows compatible format). It simply cannot compete with the power of a laptop in the same price range when it comes to doing schoolwork...entertainment on the other hand is a completely different story. My sister is a facebook maniac and loves using my iPad to talk to her friends and stuff. It is a breeze to use the website and from my experience surfing the rest of the Internet is also very easy (and pretty cool too). One of the biggest advantages the iPad has over a laptop is the fact that I can lay down and use the iPad to read the news and check my favorite forums...it's much easier to handle than a laptop. I have a whole bunch of books on it too that I can read at anytime I want (plus I don't really have to pay for them anymore...hehe) Basically, if you use a computer to do a lot of work, and you need to do a lot of multitasking (like doing research while writing an essay) you would be better off getting a mid range laptop because it woukd serve this purpose much better...but if you do only a small of amount of work such as word processing then you would be ok worki on the iPad so long as you buy the keyboard. If you are going to use the iPad mainly for Internet use and leisure, then it would be absolutely perfect. So really you have to judge for yourself if the device suits your needs. (btw, because the iPad lacks flash support you cannot use the chat function of facebook, which is pretty annoying and also an example of how using the ipad can sometimes be a real limitation when compared to a computer)

As for the keyboards, just so you know I typed this whole answer up with the onscreen keyboard on the iPad so if there are any typos it's because of that (although the autocorrect is remarkably good). I looked it up on google and it states that if you buy a wireless keyboard you will have to use a separate iPad dock to hold the device up...the wired one Howe er already has a dock built in. If you get a keyboard then I think it should be the wired one because it is cheaper and there isn't much use in a wireless keyboard since you will never be at far away from the screen if you are doing some serious typing...and anyways the onscreen keyboard is very easy to use so I doubt that you would use it too often.

So you decide, get a laptop to do some serious work for school and as much facebook as you like or get an iPad and get a lot more portability with your web surfing but some serious limitations with your ability to do work which requires you to have several programs open and stuff....well that's it hope I helped!!!
