A. I've tried it before, yes you can, but you might wanna make the case and paint water proof.

What are the horizontal and vertical dimensions of a 8.9 inch diagonal screen?

A. Dimensions given in inches are often incorrect, or 'nominal' as manufacturers call them. If the diagonal is indeed 8.9*2.54 cm and the width to height ratio is 16:9 then the width:height:diagonal relation is 16:9:sqrt(16^2+9^2) = 16:9:18.4 and therefore the width is 8.9" * 16/18.4 = 7.76" and the height is 8.9" * 9/18.4 = 4.36"
Note that Apple photoshopped the images of the galaxy to make it look more like ipad. On these images the galaxy tab has the 'old' 4:3 ratio.
Oops, apparently the galaxy is 16:10, you do the math for that case.
