Q. So I received a kindle fire as a gift(it was bought in store) and I was wondering if there was a way to tell if it was the newer updated one vs the older version? The copyright date on the box is 2012 but I assume they were still making the older versions in early 2012.
I read the newer ones have ads, i don't see ads on this.
A. Just check the system version on your Kindle Fire. The Kindle Fire 2nd Generation (the newer version) has version number starting with 10, while Kindle Fire 1st Generation has it starting with the number 6. Here you can find details on the software update number:

I believe yours won't be Kindle Fire HD right? The Fire HD can be easily recognized, as it has a front-facing camera.

Q. Hi, I'm trying to update my kindle form 5.1.2 to 5.3.2.1, and Everytime I've tried it comes up with update error 006. I dont know what to do. I redownloaded the software ive done everything.
