Q. Silly question, I know. But do Kindles only support amazon kindle books? Or can you buy and download any type of ebook from other websites to a kindle?
A. Hi bunny, Kindle does support PDF so you can side load books however it doesn't support ePub format that is the universal format most used in the world (thus most of free ebooks out there - including in other languages - are in ePub format.) Nook devices support ePub and are also technically much better eReaders. E-Ink Nook Simple Touch from Barnes & Noble at $99 (without ads) has twice the battery life of Kindle ($139 without ads), faster page turns than Kindle, and microSD card slot to expand capacity that neither Kindle has. With Nook you can checkout eBooks from public libraries - just need to get Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) software (free from Adobe site). Also it's worth mentioning that if you walk in with any Nook to Barnes & Noble store, you'll get tech support and youâre allowed to read ANY available eBook for free while in the store via free provided in the store Wi-Fi where Nook eBook store has over 2.5 million of paid books and about the same number of free public domain books. Nook already has Cloud as your ebooks are stored in your online library as well as downloaded to your device. Nook Simple Touch actually has a hidden web browser - just press the virtual "Search" button at the bottom of your Nook's screen and key a URL into the search bar when it comes up. That's not just my opinion - Consumer Reports, CNET, PCWORLD, etc. pro reviews and recommendations stated that Nook Simple Touch is the best ereader on the market.
Does kindle fire support open office?
Q.
A. Hi Bob, Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet do not support OpenOffice but have QuickOffice app available to purchase. Nook Tablet is much better without a doubt, it's a class above Kindle Fire. Amazon's own web site has hundreds (more than 1400 by now) of reviews of Kindle Fire's new owners that gave it 1 or 2 star reviews because of choppy/laggy experience they got from this underpowered device. All pro reviewers on the web clearly voiced that Nook Tablet is a much better device with superior performance compared to Kindle Fire. Nook Tablet has been getting rave reviews and it is the best device in it's class. It's got Netflix, Hulu, Pandora, Angry Brids, etc., the best battery life, the best non-glare laminated screen, double the RAM and space for apps/photos/movies, microSD slot and a microphone for Skype (not on kindle), physical volume controls on the side (not on Kindle), very smooth video playback with excellent screen, and very fast apps load.
How far Kindle DX support PDFs?
Q. I am with the plans to buy a Kindle DX. I will be using it mostly for reading pdfs with the fonts not supported by Kindle DX (Tamil). I like to know the support and limitations it has to read such kind of pdfs.
I know that 6 inches kindle are not good for pdf reading and hence going for Kindle DX.
Suggestions for any other ereaders are also welcome
A. Hi,
Kindle's are terrible for reading PDFs. I know, I have one. The problem is that they are not automatically resized -- you must use a program to change them. Amazon says Kindle "supports" PDFs and that's true, but to read them you must zoom into the PDF like zooming into a picture. It is virtually impossible to read a file this way, so you really have to convert if first.

The problem is that when you convert the file, if the conversion program doesn't understand any characters in the text then it will render them poorly. If you're translating Tamil that could be a serious problem.
Here's an idea: why not download some free conversion software first, then try and convert a few Tamil files. If it works then great, get a Kindle. Otherwise go with a Sony Reader or Nook.
