Q. Well I've decided to jump on the kindle fire bandwagon, so i'm wondering what case is best to protect it, and if I need screen protectors?
A. Well it's pretty subjective which case is the best.
If you want the most protection probably the hard cases are the best-

But the leather cases are more stylish and functional (for using clip on lights, credit card pockets etc):

As far as screen protection goes-
The kindle fire screen is supposed to be super hard, so it's not likely it's going to break.
But I would probably put a screen protector on to prevent annoying scratches.
I think the boxwave screen protectors are seriously the best:

The boxwave protectors are really good quality, so one protector will probably be all you need for the life of the device.
They can be removed and re-applied with no glue residue.
You can either choose the crystal clear one (which is really really clear but also causes glare).. or the glare free ones which have a matte finish.
Personally I like the crystal ones.
Does a Kindle Fire HD 7" really need a screen protector?
Q. Someone told me it'd be a good idea to get one, but is it really necessary?
A. It's really up to you. IMHO, it's not a cheap device so you may want to have it better protected. With a well protected screen, there'll be a better resell price too, when you want to sell it later.
There's some good actual user review here on using protector on the Kindle, will help you decide if you want it:

Suggested screen protectors for Kindle 3?
Q. Does anyone know of any Kindle 3 specific screen protectors?
I don't want to have to cut to size, glare-proof would be great, and easily removable without residue.
I've gone long enough without one and now for some reason I'm getting paranoid my screen will get scratched.
A. This one fits the kindle 3 perfectly:

Very durable, yet clear. Pretty easy to apply, and strong enough that you can remove it to fix a mistake. Also doesn't leave a residue that I can see.
I have that on my k3 and am happy with it.
