Q. I have 500 dollars store credit at best buy. I own a windows 7 desktop at home and a 500 gb external hard drive. The iPad is $500 and the laptop i'm considering is a $550 dell inspiron(I can pay the extra 50). If I own a desktop already would an iPad or a Laptop be a better choice?
BTW storage isn't much of an issue since i own a 500 gb external hard drive.
A. Lap top if you sit still, iPad if on the move
Laptop if storage capacity is necessary, ipad if you would rather stream audio video material anywhere you go
Laptop if you prefer the keyboard, iPad if you prefer the screen

Q. this is the way it SHOULD work. go apple. anyhow, i have a mac running snow leopard, and windows xp with bootcamp, so both mac and pc solutions should work.
i don't want to have to sync it with itunes, or some other program, in order to transfer files and apps. it would be much faster and simpler (for ipods and iphones as well) if i could just drag and drop a single file, in the same way an external hard drive works.
A. Why exactly would you want to use your iPad as an external hard drive when you can only get 16, 32, or 64GB of storage at the most? For that amount of storage just get a USB memstick. It'll cost you less and is easier to transport.
