What are the cons to buying a used kindle?

Q. I had a kindle with a keyboard but it broke. So I wanted to buy a used one, but are there any negatives to this besides it being in less than new condition? I mean I would have to wipe their info and reregister it in my name. Is that a lot of work? Also I can get my books and everything from my computer with my amazon account so my books aren't lost? Thanks

A. Well, generally you can just unregister the device and re-register with your own amazon user account.
There can be an issue if you get sold a stolen kindle, since the original owner can report it to amazon and the kindle will be permanently deactivated by amazon.
But the more likely issue is that you could buy a kindle that already has problems, such as a battery that doesn't hold a charge, or issues with the screen.

Honestly, with electronics, i generally have found I regret buying used. The price of the basic and keyboard kindles has been lowered, so I would probably just buy new, and then you get a 12 month warranty from amazon.

You can get the basic kindle for a cheap price via amazon here:

Or the 3g keyboard kindle here (which is great if you love the web as you can browse for free anywhere, not just in wifi range like the basic kindle):

Anyways good luck with your choice.

Original Question

How do you like the screen on the Nook Color and Kindle Fire?
Q. I am considering getting either the Kindle Fire or Nook Tablet in the next month or so. I'm concerned about the screen display on them though since they aren't like the e-ink. I was wondering what everyone's experience has been with the Nook Color (since the tablet hasn't been released yet) and the Kindle Fire, if anyone has one of those yet. Also, for those that read right before bed time, does it affect you falling asleep?

A. Hi, Zach, reading off LCD screens of tablet device is practically the same as reading off a computer screen. Nook Color (and Nook Tablet as well) has a better VividView technology screen with non-glare coating that makes it a bit better than on others, but it is still not as eye-stress-free as of e-ink devices.
In my opinion e-Ink Nook Simpletouch and LCD Nook Tablet from Barnes & Noble are much better devices than comparable Kindle models. Nook tablet is $224 if sign up for Barnes & Noble membership. 11.5 hours battery life for reading and 9 hours of video playback time - that's vs. 8 hours for reading and 7.5 hours of video playback on Kindle Fire (even that 7.5 hours will not hold true in tests, video playback drains battery much more than reading) 1.0 GB RAM Vs. 512 MB RAM of Kindle Fire, 16 GB content capacity plus 32 GB via microSD card vs. 8 GB capacity of Kindle Fire with no expansion slot. Fully laminated HD screen for reduced glare vs. no lamination of Kindle Fire. Bulit-in and optimized Netflix and Hulu plus with millions of movies/shows vs. 100K movies/shows of Amazon store. Many popular apps in Nook app Store (like Angy Birds, Pandora, QuickOffice, etc.) Nook Tablet has built-in mic for Skype voice conferencing and dictations to speech recognition software. Nook already has Cloud as all eBooks in your online library are stored there as well as downloaded to your device. Also, If you walk in with the Nook to Barnes & Noble store, youâre allowed to read ANY available eBook for free while in the store via free provided in the store Wi-Fi and you get free technical support in case of issues in any of the store.
Nooks (since Nook Color) are the darlings of the root'ing community especially because they have microSD slot (not on Kindle Fire) thus Nooks can be rooted by burning OS image on the microSD card and booting off it without rooting the actual device and voiding the warranty. On Kindle, once you rooted there's no coming back.
You can buy Nookâs at Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Millon, Walmart, BestBuy, Staples, OfficeMax, Fred Mayer, P.C. Richard, Radio Shack, Target, Fry's, etc. stores and web sites.

Original Question

Can you use an Amazon gift card for the payment option on the Kindle Fire HD?
Q. I just bought the kindle fire HD, and it won't let me purchase anything until I set up my one click payment option. I don't have a credit card, and I don't want to get a reloadable card with fees, I was wondering if it's possible to use an Amazon gift card? If so, are there any requirements? Such as a certain balance, etc . Please answer my question! Thanks.

A. Of course, you can do it like that.

The following are the terms and conditions applicable to Amazon.com Gift Cards.

1.Redemption.
Amazon.com Gift Cards ("Gift Cards") may only be redeemed toward the purchase of eligible products on www.amazon.com, or its affiliated websites smile.amazon.com, www.myhabit.com and fresh.amazon.com. Redemption of Gift Cards on any affiliated website is subject to change in our sole discretion. Purchases are deducted from the redeemerâs Gift Card balance. Any unused Gift Card balance will be placed in the redeemerâs Amazon.com account. If a purchase exceeds the redeemerâs Gift Card balance, the remaining amount must be paid with another payment method. ACI Gift Cards, Inc. or its affiliates ("we", "us", and "our") may provide Gift Card purchasers with information about the redemption status of Gift Cards that they purchase. To view your Gift Card balance, visit Your Account on Amazon.com. No fees apply to Gift Cards.

2.Limitations.
Gift Cards may not be redeemed for the purchase of products at www.amazon.at, www.amazon.com.br, www.amazon.ca, www.amazon.cn, www.amazon.de, www.amazon.es, www.amazon.fr, www.amazon.in, www.amazon.it, www.amazon.co.jp, www.amazon.com.mx, www.amazon.co.uk, or any other website owned and operated by us, our affiliates, or any other person or entity, except as indicated by these terms and conditions. Gift Cards cannot be used to purchase other gift cards. Gift Cards cannot be reloaded, resold, transferred for value or redeemed for cash, except to the extent required by law. Unused Gift Card balances in an Amazon.com account may not be transferred to another Amazon.com account.

3.Risk of Loss.
The risk of loss and title for Gift Cards pass to the purchaser upon our electronic transmission of the Gift Card to the purchaser or designated recipient, or our delivery to the carrier, whichever is applicable. We are not responsible if any Gift Card is lost, stolen, destroyed or used without your permission.

4.Fraud.
We will have the right to close customer accounts and bill alternative forms of payment if a fraudulently obtained Gift Card is redeemed and/or used to make purchases on Amazon.com or any of its affiliated websites set forth above.

5.Limitation of Liability.
WE MAKE NO WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, WITH RESPECT TO GIFT CARDS, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION, ANY EXPRESS OR IMPLIED WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. IN THE EVENT A GIFT CARD IS NON-FUNCTIONAL, YOUR SOLE REMEDY, AND OUR SOLE LIABILITY, WILL BE THE REPLACEMENT OF SUCH GIFT CARD. CERTAIN STATE LAWS DO NOT ALLOW LIMITATIONS ON IMPLIED WARRANTIES OR THE EXCLUSION OR LIMITATION OF CERTAIN DAMAGES. IF THESE LAWS APPLY TO YOU, SOME OR ALL OF THE ABOVE DISCLAIMERS, EXCLUSIONS, OR LIMITATIONS MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU, AND YOU MAY HAVE ADDITIONAL RIGHTS.

6.Disputes.
Any dispute or claim relating in any way to Gift Cards will be resolved by binding arbitration, rather than in court, except that you may assert claims in small claims court if your claims qualify. The Federal Arbitration Act and federal arbitration law apply to this agreement.

There is no judge or jury in arbitration, and court review of an arbitration award is limited. However, an arbitrator can award on an individual basis the same damages and relief as a court (including injunctive and declaratory relief or statutory damages), and must follow the terms of these Gift Card terms and conditions as a court would.

To begin an arbitration proceeding, you must send a letter requesting arbitration and describing your claim to our registered agent Corporation Service Company, 300 Deschutes Way SW, Suite 304, Tumwater, WA 98051. The arbitration will be conducted by the American Arbitration Association ("AAA") under its rules, including the AAA's Supplementary Procedures for Consumer-Related Disputes. The AAA's rules are available at www.adr.org or by calling 1-800-778-7879. Payment of all filing, administration and arbitrator fees will be governed by the AAA's rules. We will reimburse those fees for claims totaling less than $10,000 unless the arbitrator determines the claims are frivolous. Likewise, we will not to seek attorneys' fees and costs in arbitration unless the arbitrator determines the claims are frivolous. You may choose to have the arbitration conducted by telephone, based on written submissions, or in person in the county where you live or at another mutually agreed location.

We and you agree that any dispute resolution proceedings will be conducted only on an individual basis and not in a class, consolidated or representative action. If for any reason a claim proceeds in court rather than in arbitration we each waive any right to a jury trial. We and you also agree that you or we may bring suit in court to enjoin infringement or other misuse of intellectual property rights.

7.General Terms.
The Amazon.com Conditions of Use apply. Gift Cards are issued by ACI Gift Cards, Inc., a Washington corporation. When you purchase, receive or redeem a Gift Card, you agree that the laws of the State of Washington, without regard to principles of conflict of laws, will govern these Gift Card terms and conditions. We reserve the right to change these terms and conditions from time to time in our discretion. All terms and conditions are applicable to the extent permitted by law.

8.Previously Expired Gift Cards:
Gift Cards issued after October 1, 2005 do not expire and may be redeemed for eligible purchases notwithstanding any stated expiration date. Expiration dates also do not apply for any Gift Cards issued prior to October 1, 2005 in CA, CT, LA, ME, MD, MA, MT, NH, ND, OK, RI, VT, WA, or in any other jurisdiction solely to the extent prohibited or limited by law. All other Gift Cards issued prior to October 1, 2005 expire in accordance with their stated terms.
